BOGGED DOWN WITH BLOGS?

Marketing. Promotion. Tooting your own horn. The bane of the writing life--or a boost?

You're hoping to hear someone say, “I'll take care of that aspect of the industry. Your job is to write.” Am I right? Someone who will take the burden off your shoulders, tell the world about your book, make sales for you so you can spend your valuable time sitting at your computer cranking out the next novel.

Fugetaboutit!

I'm a writer too. My second Christy Bristol Astrology Mystery, WHERE ANGELS FEAR, ju… Continue

WHOSE FAULT IS IT ANYWAY?

I have a friend who, after two decades of writing several novels, is ready to throw in the towel.

This person has published a non-fiction book in the distant past. You would think she would have some inkling of the changes in the publishing industry since then.

The reason she's failing is that she has bought into the mantra: "I need an agent. I need a major publishing house." Because the blinders are on, she has failed to notice that the publishing world is in the same economic crisis as the r… Continue

BAN THAT BOOK!

There are weeks devoted to a variety of causes, but September 27 to October 4 “celebrates” Banned Books Week. The festivities are brought to you by the American Library Association along with other bookish groups and is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

To prepare for the week-long event, order your BBW kits now. This includes three posters, a set of bookmarks, a list of banned books, and a button that announces “I Read Banned Books.”

What notorious books are we t… Continue

THE TRUTH OF FICTION

When I worked for the Sheriff's Department in Fresno, I created a saying and put it on a rolling banner as a screen saver: “A Writer Reinvents the Truth.”

This was never more accurate than when I wrote my first book, FOOLS RUSH IN. I took the first case I worked as a secretary for an undercover narcotics team and fictionalized it to include a kidnapping, two murders and a budding romance.

On August 13, I was invited to speak to a book club three hours away on the Pacific coast. Summer means 10… Continue

Lovely Martha Cheves has already reviewed one and put on this site, "Uncle Si's Secret," and Clark commented on her review. She's (Martha) planning on also reviewing "Death of a Perfect Man." She's been here awhile it seems. Couldn't ask for more! The reviews here are well done, and I plan to pick up some of the books. My stack is already toppling over... Madeline

Society was so against the drug dealers that the police in Minneapolis were given carte blanche to do what ever it took to bring down the dealers. Well, the day came when a police officer who led the task force overstepped decency and took out a rear wall of a house with a fork lift narrowly missing a sleeping child's crib. Then he did raid a wrong house and caused the death of an elderly couple.
Those were really tough days.
I recall the client I represented who was in State Prison for 10 years for dealing. He was there and got out daily to go to the University of Minnesota for classes to get a degree. What a joke, every day he came back to the prison with coke for the inmates.
He got busted on the streets buying and served another 10 years with no more education!!!

By the way, most officers are good and decent, however, as with everything there are a few who have problems.

In my other career, I defended many drug people. Many times I would visit some in the jails to get the information about what they did and take them through the system. What was the worst part about it was in the early days (1970's and 1980's) when we mostly had addicts in jail. They were so strung out and in a jail cell coming down from heavy drugs like Heroin. The pain was horrific and the police officers just made fun of them saying it was their own faults. Many times addiction is something which comes about before the person knows it hits them. They try a little and that becomes a lot.
I saw young girls who had to work the streets just to support their habits. Times changed, the people on the streets became the dealers of drugs and the girls? Well they left the streets and who knows where they went.
Our society really changed in those early years. There were drug dealers and there were really big time drug dealers. The money was so great they could not stay away and then the laws changed and they were put away for a long time. The story of your first book is the story which is really about everyone in the drug world.

Glad to have you as a part of our site and really look forward to your books.
